observing Fisher's summer performance in London's Public Record Office. Jameson's reserve "did nothing to prevent him from having an eye for a pretty girl/' Fisher would write of the man she always called her "beloved chief." Two years later, in 1928, when Jameson became chief of the manuscripts division of the Library of Congress, Fisher was appointed the library's foreign archivist, a post she would temporarily relinquish only after the British capital came under bombardment from the Luftwaffe.

In Du Bois, Fisher had another reserved admirer. The joint research project she had suggested at the end of 1934—a history of the Royal African Company— had excited her "Dear Burghardt." Nothing was to come of the venture, but, in the stimulated reply to Fisher's proposal, Du Bois supplied the embryonic, perspicacious thesis that would have underpinned their book —viz., the stock market as the progeny of the slave auction block. "I think that the international relations built up through the slave trade and based on the great crops of tobacco, cotton, sugar, and rice rebuilt and reoriented the modern world," he postulated. He was to be Fisher's guest at her comfortable flat in St. John's Wood during ten busy London days of teas and dinners with scholars Du Bois sought to interest in the Encyclopedia of the Negro. A call to the Far & Near Press Bureau was intended to further plans for lecturing in China and Japan. His Friday dinner in Fisher's flat with one of the world's leading anthropologists, Bronislaw Malinowski of the University of London, went exceedingly well. Mal-inowski readily agreed to lend his name to the encyclopedia project and suggested several ethnographers Du Bois ought to contact. On Sunday, he lunched with the H. G. Wellses. Two years Du Bois's senior. Wells had devoted himself to matching his fabulous contributions to science fiction, universal history, Fabian propaganda, and opinionated sociology with a passionate, troubled advocacy of peace brought about through world government. Much as their early afternoon together may have been a congress of mutual admiration between two believers in world democracy, a biographer naturally regrets the extreme economy of Du Bois's reference to a meeting of two intellectual giants of the twentieth century. On Thursday, twenty-fifth, after a busy round of social engagements and an evening performance of Chekhov's Seagull, starring John Guilgud, he crossed the Channel against a mild wind to Belgium.

Du Bois dined well and cheaply in Brussels, visited the postcard-Gothic Hotel de Ville, idled in the Grand-Place, probably Europe's most congenial public square, and indulged his fondness for movies. He was drawn repeatedly to the great park and palace at Tervuren, southeast of Brussels. Leopold II, the despoiler of the Congo, had thought to compensate his kingdom's small size by endowing Brussels with such outsized replicas of other European capitals' signature monuments such as the Versailles chateau and the Brandenburg Gate. He was vividly reminded that Tervuren was Leopold's conception of Versailles
